Description
CMC sodium carboxymethyl cellulose salt is an anionic natural cellulose derivative, appearing as a white to pale yellow powder. CMC-Na is highly hygroscopic and water-soluble, forming a high-viscosity transparent colloid. Its main functions are efficient thickening, reducing fluid loss (preventing leakage), and stabilizing the wellbore. In low-solids drilling fluids, it significantly reduces fluid loss, carries drill cuttings, and protects the drill bit. CMC-Na remains stable in high-temperature (above 150°C) and high-salt environments, thereby improving drilling speed and safety.
Application
CMC-HV&CMC-LV are primarily used as a drilling mud additive in natural gas and oil drilling, with its core functions being thickening, reducing filtration loss, and stabilizing the wellbore. CMC-Na effectively increases drilling fluid viscosity to suspend drill cuttings, reduces filtration loss by forming a dense mud cake on the wellbore, and simultaneously inhibits the dispersion of shale, ensuring drilling safety.

Performance
Specific functions of CMC HV&CMC LV sodium carboxymethyl cellulose salt in natural gas and oil drilling:
- Rheological adjustment and thickening: As a high-yield viscosifier, CMC-HV&CMC-LV can significantly increase the viscosity and shear strength of drilling fluid, enhancing its ability to suspend and carry drill cuttings, and preventing drill cuttings from accumulating at the bottom of the well.
- Filtration control: It forms a thin, dense filter cake on the wellbore, preventing water from seeping into the formation from the drilling fluid, thereby reducing fluid loss and maintaining formation stability.
- Shale inhibition and wellbore stabilization: Through ionic action, it forms a protective film on the shale surface, preventing well collapse caused by shale swelling or dispersion due to water absorption.
- Cooling and lubrication: CMC-Na has good thermal stability, reducing drill string wear and maintaining stable drilling fluid performance in high-temperature deep well environments.
- Distinction between high-viscosity and low-viscosity CMC: CMC-HV is mainly used to increase drilling fluid viscosity, enhance suspension capacity, and reduce fluid loss; CMC-LV focuses on efficient fluid loss reduction with minimal viscosity increase, and is mostly used in high-density mud and to increase pumping speed.
